These colourfully dressed guards are officially known as Yeomen Warders and they guard the Tower of London. They also attend any coronations, forming a guard of honour.
The nickname, Beefeater, is often thought to come from the French word buffetier - guards who protected the food of French Kings. It is more likely, however, to come from a time when the warders were paid in chunks of beef!
